Hastelloy B-2

Hastelloy is a family of superalloys created by Haynes International. These alloys are known for their excellent resistance to corrosion, which makes them extremely useful in a variety of harsh environments. The term "Hastelloy" has also become synonymous with high-performance nickel-based alloys, and various Hastelloy grades are now available, each offering different sets of benefits.

A Hastelloy bar generally refers to a piece of this superalloy that has been shaped into a bar form. They can be found in several variations depending on the specific grade of Hastelloy, from Hastelloy B, C, X, and more.

Hastelloy bar production process

Producing Hastelloy bars involves a series of steps that generally include the following:

  1. Raw Materials: The first step to producing Hastelloy bars is to have the correct combination of raw materials. This generally includes a mixture of nickel, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, and other elements like iron or cobalt, as per the specific alloys need to be manufactured.

  2. Melting: The raw materials are initially melted together in an electric arc or induction furnace.

  3. Refining: The molten metal is then refined using argon oxygen decarburization (AOD) or another refining process to eliminate impurities and ensure a consistent chemical composition.

  4. Casting: After refining, the molten alloy is cast into large billets. This is usually done by pouring the molten metal into molds, but continuous casting methods may also be used. The cast billets are allowed to cool and solidify.

  5. Hot Rolling: The cast billets are then hot rolled, or heated to a high temperature and passed through a series of rollers to reduce their size to that of a bar. The rolling mills gradually decrease the bar's thickness while increasing its length.

  6. Annealing: After hot rolling, the Hastelloy bars often undergo an annealing process to relieve internal stresses and further improve ductility. Here, the bars are heated to a specific temperature, held at that temperature, and then cooled at a controlled rate.

  7. Cold Rolling/Finishing: Cold rolling or finishing reduces the diameter further and completes the final shape and size. Cold rolling also improves the surface finish and dimensional precision of the bar.

  8. Inspection and Testing: Finally, the Hastelloy bars undergo various inspections and tests to ensure they meet the required specifications. This can include visual examinations, dimensional checks, and chemical analysis, amongst other tests.

  9. Packaging and Shipping: Once the bars have passed all necessary inspections, they are then packaged for storage or shipping to customers.

The above process can vary depending on the specific grade of Hastelloy being produced, as different grades require different combinations of raw materials and may have slightly different manufacturing processes. But the fundamental steps will largely stay the same.

Common forms of Hastelloy bar

Hastelloy, a type of superalloy known for its exceptional resistance to corrosion and high temperatures, comes in various grades and forms. Commonly, Hastelloy bars are offered in the following shapes:

  1. Round Bar: These are perhaps the most common form of Hastelloy bar. They are cylindrical in shape and are typically used in applications where strength and toughness are needed. They are available in different diameters and lengths to suit various applications.

  2. Flat Bar: Hastelloy flat bars, also known as rectangular bars, are flat and rectangular in shape. They are typically used in applications where a strong, corrosion-resistant flat surface is needed.

  3. Square Bar: Hastelloy square bars, as the name suggests, are long bars with a square cross-section. They are typically used for applications where a sturdy, corrosion-resistant structure with uniform dimensions is critical.

  4. Hex Bar: Hexagonal bars, or hex bars, have a cross-section in the shape of a hexagon. These bars are typically used in mechanical and engineering applications where precise shapes are required.

Advantages of Hastelloy plate

Hastelloy plate is a form of Hastelloy, a superalloy that is comprised primarily of nickel and exhibits excellent corrosion resistance. Choosing Hastelloy for plates used in manufacturing or construction brings a number of advantages:

  1. Corrosion Resistance: Hastelloy alloys exhibit excellent resistance to corrosion in a wide range of harsh environments. They are particularly resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion, as well as to many oxidizing and reducing acids. These properties make Hastelloy plates ideal for applications where corrosive chemicals or high salinity are present.

  2. High-Temperature Durability: Hastelloy plates can retain much of their strength and structural integrity even at extremely high temperatures. This makes them suitable for use in high-temperature applications such as in heat exchangers, reactor vessels and in parts of nuclear reactors.

  3. Durability and Longevity: Thanks to their outstanding corrosion resistance and mechanical integrity, Hastelloy plates tend to have a very long service life. They can handle a great deal of wear and tear, which ultimately saves resources over time by reducing the frequency of replacements.

  4. Ease of Fabrication: Although Hastelloy is a hard and durable material, it can be relatively easy to fabricate. This allows for the creation of complex shapes and structures, offering flexibility in design and manufacture.

  5. Chemical Processing: Hastelloy plates are often used in chemical processing due to their resistance to a large number of corrosive substances. This includes resistance to solutions such as wet chlorine gas, hypochlorite, and chlorine dioxide, which can cause premature failure in many other materials.

  6. Weldability: Hastelloy can be effectively welded, allowing for the creation of complex, large-scale structures without compromising the metal’s resistance to corrosion and high temperatures.
